newly built U.S. single-family homes figure

..stocks were off session highs after the government said sales of newly built U.S. single-family homes fell unexpectedly to a record low in January, hinting at potential trouble for the fragile housing recovery.

"It's awful. This is with the home buyer tax credit. I don't understand people who say the housing market is turning. This number tells you housing is dead still," said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey.
