U.S. job growth accelerated in October, but the unemployment rate
ticked higher, signs of a steady but slow recovery as the presidential
candidates make a final push ahead of next week's election.
U.S. payrolls increased by a seasonally adjusted 171,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said Friday. The politically important unemployment rate, obtained by a separate survey of U.S. households, rose one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.9%.
Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires expected a gain of 125,000 in payrolls and a 7.9% jobless rate.
