“The economy hits bottom when manufacturers stop cutting production,” Christopher Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Toyko-Mitsubishi UFJ in New York, says in a note to clients this week. He says “it’s not clear whether production can continue to fall at this rapid of a monthly rate” if consumer spending with consumer spending rising in the first quarter. The recession, he says, “will be over the month it hits the low point.”
