No, leaving the euro zone would not be impossible for a determined political class with the people behind it. It would just be extremely difficult and very uncomfortable, probably for a very long time.
However, the pre-crisis assumption that no one would dare to check out simply because of this truth has certainly foundered. After all, plenty of member states are now facing years of uncomfortable austerity as the price of staying in. On balance that probably remains preferable to the terrible financial apocalypse they’d face if they got out, but the argument is certainly far weaker than it used to be.
