Yes, the inevitable has finally happened.
With the announcement that the the failing NHS Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridgeshire will be handed over to private health company Circle, the slow but inevitable privatization of the British health system has begun.
The decision hasn't been taken lightly. As the Telegraph's Andrew Porter notes, the Treasury took over a year to sign off on the deal, indicating severe apprehension at touching what many view as a key cornerstone of British society (and potentially electoral suicide for the Conservatives).

In a historic day for the National Health Service, the Hinchingbrooke deal is the most complete takeover to date of a complete district general hospital by the private sector, even if it stops a long way short of full privatisation.
But there is no doubt that Ali Parsa, the former Goldman Sachs banker who runs Circle, has taken on an almighty challenge – one that most of his private sector competitors walked away from.

Failing NHS hospital is taken over by private firm for the first time in history

A failing NHS hospital has been handed to a private company for the first time in history.

Ministers yesterday insisted that debt-ridden Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridgeshire was facing closure without the management takeover by Circle Healthcare, in a ground-breaking deal that could become a model for saving other cash-strapped NHS hospitals.

From February, Circle Healthcare, which is run by a former Goldman Sachs banker and partly listed on the stock market, will have full control of hiring and firing staff under a ten-year contract.
