1987 Redux?

The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index has risen each day for the first six trading sessions of the year.

Howard Sliverblatt, the S.&P. numbers guru, says that happened only once before, in 1987, when the string ended at seven days.

Many have forgotten that 1987 got off to a tremendous start. The S.&P. was up 20 percent in the first quarter of the year. It rose nicely in the next two quarters as well. Then came October.
